Liber is a book app for iPhone. This page says what it keeps, where that goes, and what it never does. The short version: your library lives on your phone, a synced library is encrypted before it leaves, and nothing about you is sold, shared or used for ads.
Who we are
Liber is made by Lucas Paraizo, an independent developer in the United Kingdom ("we"). We are the controller of the little personal data described here. Write to hello@liber.page about anything on this page.
Your library stays on your phone
The books you add, your shelves, pages, reading times, ratings, notes, lending, goal and photos are stored on your iPhone. They are not sent to us unless you turn on sync. There is no Liber account: no email address, no name, no password.
Finding books
When you search for a book, scan a barcode or import a Goodreads file, Liber asks its own server to look the book up and fetch its cover. The server passes the request on to public catalogues (Open Library, Google Books and others) in its own name, so they never see who is asking, and it keeps no record of what you searched. A Goodreads file is read on your phone and is never uploaded.
Sync, if you turn it on
Sync keeps your library the same on each of your iPhones. Liber gives you a key, and your library is encrypted on your phone with it (AES-GCM) before it is uploaded. Our server stores only that encrypted copy and can't read it. Nobody, us included, can recover a lost key. You can stop syncing, or delete the synced copy from our server, at any time in the app.
Liber Plus
Purchases are made and charged by Apple through the App Store. To know what you've bought, Liber uses RevenueCat, which receives your purchase receipts and a random identifier for this copy of the app, not your name, email or library. Apple's own privacy policy covers what it does with your payment.
Camera and photos
The camera is used to read barcodes and to photograph a cover or spine. A photo you pick is opened on your phone, and only the part you crop is kept, with your library.
Shops
For a book on your wishlist, Get it opens a shop's website (Bookshop.org or Amazon). What you do there is between you and the shop, under its own privacy policy. Liber may earn a commission on what you buy; the shop doesn't tell us who you are.
Anonymous counts
To know what to make better, Liber sends its own server a few counts: that the app was opened that day (and how many days since it was first opened), the size range of the library (like "50 to 99 books"), and when something happens, like a book being added by scanning, the paywall opening, or Sync being turned on. If something goes wrong in the app, it sends the error's message, with any quoted text left out, and where in the app it happened.
Each count is stored as the day, what happened, a short label like "scan" and the app version. There is no identifier, so counts from one phone can't be told apart from another's, and the server doesn't keep the IP address they came from or the time of day. No book titles, notes or searches are ever sent. To stop them, turn off Share anonymous counts at the bottom of Stats.
What we never do
- No advertising, and no third-party advertising or analytics trackers. The anonymous counts above go only to Liber's own server.
- No selling or sharing of your data.
- No reading of your library, synced or not.
Where it runs
Liber's server runs on Cloudflare, which handles the requests your phone makes to it, including your IP address while it does so. Purchases go through Apple and RevenueCat. Apple may share anonymous crash reports with us if you've agreed to that on your iPhone.
Your rights
Your library is on your device, so you can change or delete it at any time; deleting Liber deletes it from your phone. Under UK and EU law you can ask us what personal data we hold about you, and to correct or delete it: write to hello@liber.page. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Liber collects nothing from anyone, children included, beyond what's described here.
Changes
If this page changes, the date at the top changes too, and anything that matters will be said in the app.
